Zabbar Road: Greener, Safer & More Sustainable Roads

Zabbar Road: Greener, Safer & More Sustainable Future
Apr 3 2025 Share

Żabbar Road is now greener, safer, and more sustainable.

With 3,223 new trees and plants, the area now benefits from improved air quality, additional shade, and stronger biodiversity.

This urban greening effort helps reduce heat and enhances the environment for residents.

A 1 km shared mobility space has been introduced, creating a safer, more sustainable route for pedestrians and cyclists.

New footpath lighting enhances nighttime safety, improving visibility and making the space more secure.

Flood mitigation efforts include a temporary French drain system, with a new underground reservoir currently in development. This will collect rainwater to support irrigation and prevent flooding.

These upgrades contribute to a safer, more sustainable, and more resilient Żabbar Road.

Repubblika Hold Protest Outside Parliament

Repubblika Hold Protest Outside Parliament

A protest organised by Repubblika took place outside Parliament on Wednesday after the government passed a Bill restricting the public’s right to request magisterial inquiries.

The demonstration coincided with the vote, which was approved by 37 votes to 30, with the Opposition voting against.

Protesters banged pots and pans, blew whistles, and shouted slogans as ministers entered and exited Parliament.

Many carried placards reading “Mafia,” “A Cabinet of Criminal Accomplices,” and “The Police Commissioner Sleeps in the Face of Corruption.”

Addressing the protest, Repubblika president Vicky-Ann Cremona said the Bill was an attack on justice, accusing the government of protecting those with something to hide. She announced that Repubblika would challenge the law in the Constitutional Court.

Former Repubblika president Robert Aquilina described the reform as an abuse of power, saying it aimed to block inquiries into government scandals, including the hospitals deal under former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
