An initiative combining education and inclusion has taken shape through Aġenzija Sapport’s Ħolqa Centre in Qrendi. A group of 26 architecture students from the University of Malta, including international students, worked under the guidance of Dr Alexia Mercieca from the Department of Architecture and Urban Design on a proposal to convert one floor of the centre into a Youth Hub for young people with disabilities who form part of the Sharing Lives programme.

Over recent months, the students engaged with these young participants through meetings and activities, helping them understand their needs. Working in groups, they developed creative, sustainable design ideas tailored to those who would use the space.

Their proposals were presented to Minister for Inclusion and Voluntary Organisations Julia Farrugia, Sharing Lives members, professionals, volunteers, and Sapport staff. The presentation also included contributions from Dr Irina Miodragovic Vella, the Head of Department, the Faculty Dean, and Sapport CEO Oliver Scicluna.

Minister Farrugia described the project as a first, giving students a chance to contribute directly to inclusive community design. Sharing Lives members helped choose the final design after open discussions, ensuring it reflects their expectations. The project now enters its implementation phase, led by Sapport’s project office.
