You’ll Never Guess What Malta Was Called Before It Became Malta

Before Malta became the sunny island we all know and love today, it had a completely different name. Are you ready for it? Drumroll, please… it was called Melite!
Way back in ancient times, when the Romans were marching around in sandals and togas, they called the island Melite. It comes from the Greek word meli, which means honey. That’s because Malta had – and still has – loads of bees and sweet golden honey.
But wait – there’s more! Even before the Greeks and Romans showed up, the Phoenicians (they were like ancient sailors and traders) had already been living on Malta. Some people believe they also called it a name that meant “safe haven” or “refuge” because of its good harbours.
So from honey to harbours to holiday hotspot, Malta has had quite the glow-up!
