You Won’t Believe What’s Hidden Under Malta’s Streets

MALTA: Sunny skies, blue seas… and secret tunnels? That’s right! Beneath Malta’s busy streets and historic buildings, there’s a whole world hiding underground. And what’s down there might just blow your mind!
First up, let’s talk about the World War II shelters. During the war, Malta was one of the most bombed places on Earth. People had to hide to stay safe, so they dug deep into the rock. Families built shelters under their homes, and some even had kitchens and beds underground!
But that’s not all. Malta also has underground temples that are older than the pyramids in Egypt. The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a mysterious temple carved completely out of stone – and it’s more than 5,000 years old! People used it for burials and secret rituals, and no one’s quite sure how it was built with no modern tools.
Oh, and there’s even talk of secret tunnels connecting forts, palaces and escape routes. Some say the knights used them to move around without being seen. Others believe treasure might still be hidden down there!
So next time you’re walking through Malta’s streets, just imagine – right below your feet, there could be ancient tombs, war shelters or hidden passageways from long ago.
