Speaking to Malta Daily, Nationalist Party leadership hopefuls Adrian Delia and Alex Borg were asked whether they would step aside if Roberta Metsola ever expressed interest in returning to Malta to lead the PN.

Gozitan MP Alex Borg praised Metsola’s ongoing work as President of the European Parliament, calling her an “essential part” of the Nationalist Party.

He added that given her stature and capabilities, Metsola should have a significant role within the party.

However, when asked directly if he would step down for her, Borg replied that if the PN loses the next general election, anyone should be free to contest the leadership.

Former PN leader Adrian Delia was more direct. Asked whether he sees himself as a placeholder for Metsola, Delia dismissed the idea, stating that the words interim and Adrian Delia do not go well together.

He emphasised that his candidacy is driven by conviction, saying he fully believes in his ability to take on the responsibility of leading the PN and defeating the current government in the next general election.

Both candidates expressed admiration for Metsola, but neither indicated any immediate willingness to step aside for her.
