World Standards Day Conference Showcases Government Achievements In Governance And Quality

The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA), in collaboration with the Malta Chamber of Commerce, held a conference to mark World Standards Day, focusing on governance, sustainability, and growth.
The event brought together representatives from the public and private sectors, technical experts, and professionals from various industries. Discussions centred on the upcoming revision of the international standard ISO 9001, the world’s most widely adopted quality management system. The new revision, expected to take effect next year, will place greater emphasis on quality and good governance.
Opening the conference, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul highlighted how the principles underpinning this standard reflect the Government’s vision for a quality-driven economy one that grows sustainably, respects workers’ dignity, and is built on trust and social justice. “What we are discussing today is not merely a technical or administrative topic, but one that speaks to the very character of our economy a plan for a fairer, more resilient and more prosperous Malta,” said Ellul.

Ellul concluded, “A business that embraces a culture of quality is one that respects the rights of its workers. An organisation that values ethics invests in its people, pays them fairly, and provides a supportive environment.”
George Cutajar, Director General of the Standards and Metrology Institute within the MCCAA, emphasised that leadership and ethics now lie at the heart of the new ISO/DIS 9001 standard. He explained that quality is no longer the responsibility of a single department, but a common language of management that integrates ethics, governance, and sustainability into everyday decision-making.
Cutajar also underlined the MCCAA’s role in encouraging and supporting Maltese experts’ participation in the development of European and international standards through local and foreign technical committees.
The conference also explored the role of standards in governance, innovation, and sustainable growth, featuring key speakers from KPMG Malta, Malta Enterprise, the Chamber of SMEs, the Digital Dialogue Authority, and Saint James Hospital Group, among others.
