Woman grievously injured after being hit by bicycle

A 58-year-old woman resident of Ħal Għargħur was taken to Mater Dei Hospital at around 0800hrs today after being injured in an incident in Triq Santa Katerina, Ħal Għargħur.

Preliminary investigations showed that the woman was hit by a bicycle, which was being driven by a 29-year-old man, resident of St Paul’s Bay.

They were given preliminary aid by an on site medical time, with the woman being transported to the hospital, where she was certified to have suffered grievous injuries.

The bicycle rider was not injured. Police investigations are ongoing.

Education Ministry addresses butter knife case and alarm

Following the report by Times of Malta that a fight had taken place between two 12-year-old girls in a Naxxar school that involved a butter knife, the education ministry issued a public statement to clarify how the facts were being blown out of proportion.

The Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, presided over by Minister Clifton Grima, stated that no act of violence is tolerated and thanked the educators for their immediate addressing of the situation.

‘In all the schools of the country, as is being done in the Naxxar school, massive good is being done by the educators, who with dedication and hard work give the best education to all students.’

The statement outlined the exact progress of events in the altercation and went on to say that any other version is incorrect and causing alarm for no reason whilst also undermining the educators’ work.

The statement highlighted how the student who grabbed the butter knife was immediately stopped and did not allow for any further fights.

‘The school staff took immediate action and sent for the parents on the same day. Apart form disciplinary actions, the students are being given the necessary assistance by the psychosocial team of the college itself.

Earth warming at record 0.2°C every 10 years

A new climate warning has been issued which suggests that the world is warming at a record 0.2°C per decade.

50 top scientists warned that record-high greenhouse gas emissions and diminishing air pollution have caused an unparalleled acceleration in global warming.

In a peer-reviewed study aimed at policy-makers, human induced warming between 2013 and 2022 has been increasing at an unprecedented rate of over 0.2 degrees Celsius every 10 years.

The all time high of 54 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide and other gases, about 1,700 tonnes every second, was reached in average annual emissions over the same period.

The data will be presented at the COP28 climate summit later this year in Dubai, which will assess progress toward the 2015 Paris Agreement goals.

It was found that, ironically, one of the big climate success stories of the past 10 years – the gradual drop in use of coal – has hastened the pace of global warming. This is because it has reduced the air pollution which shields Earth from sun rays.

Particle pollution from whatever source dampens warming by about half-a-degree Celsius, meaning that, in the short term, more of that heat will reach the planet’s surface as the air becomes cleaner.

Rani hints at possible feud with Love Island production

After Love Island Malta contestant Rani left the villa rather abruptly, touting medical reasons following even a sighting of her at the airport, a recent story by the contestant suggested alternative possible reasons.

Taking to Instagram story, Rani shared an article by MaltaDaily and wrote: ‘For those confused, I had a lil two day stay at the Love Island Malta villa. To say the least the production and I did not couple up.’

This sparked rumours as to what could have caused the elimination, but it could also suggest that the issues between Rani and the production team came after she left so early in her stay.

Meanwhile, Jason Micallef took to social media and interviews to critique the programme for putting ‘sex on TVM’, continuing his disdain for the show after having critiqued it after it first aired.

‘The level of ethics and standards from PBS (TVM) disappeared, if they existed at all’ he wrote. ‘The farce of selling and buying sex that is ongoing on our national television station should turn our faces red.’

He argued that the station has given space for ‘porn stars’ to justify themselves, if not celebrate it’, a possible jab at contestants (Rani herself) having an OnlyFans account.

This was met with mixed reactions, with some agreeing with the Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman and others disagreeing.

The programme has managed to draw a lot of viewership to the station, with people arguing that we should not argue in favour of sex work if people are going to get disqualified or shamed for having an OnlyFans account.
