The ‘Premju Nazzjonali Haddiem Tas-Sena’ 2024 celebrated exceptional contributions across various fields during a memorable evening of recognition.

Ten categories highlighted the achievements of Maltese and Gozitan workers, showcasing their dedication and commitment.

Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul praised their determination and the progress made in improving the nation’s economic development and quality of life. He emphasized that these values reflect Malta’s aspirations for a brighter future and congratulated all nominees and winners for their vital role in this journey.

This year’s honorees included both individual and team achievements:

Michael Bajada – Santa Marta Day Centre: Overall Winner, Worker of the Year 2024

Christabel D’Amato – Special Olympics Malta: Manager of the Year

Dr. Josianne Cutajar – OHSA: Leader of the Year

FSWS ACTS – Therapeutic Services: Team of the Year

The night’s highest honor went to Michael Bajada, recognized as Worker of the Year 2024 for 35 years of service in the social sector. The event was held under the patronage of H.E. Miriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta.

Syrians Celebrate Toppling Of Al-Assad In Malta

Syrians in Malta took local streets to celebrate the toppling of longtime dictator Bashar al-Assad, driving bar-codes and waving Syrian flags.

Local Syrians were joining celebrations taking place worldwide, as Bashar reportedly fled to Moscow and other world leaders called for the now deposed ruler to face consequences.

Bashar al-Assad ruled Syria from 2000, inheriting power from his father, Hafez al-Assad, who seized control in a 1970 coup.

Hafez’s regime was marked by paranoia and brutality, with dissenters often jailed or killed. His image became a ubiquitous symbol of the Assad dynasty’s dominance, plastered across institutions and public spaces. Bashar continued this legacy, overseeing a brutal crackdown on Syria’s 2011 democracy movement.

What began as peaceful protests escalated into one of the century’s deadliest wars, killing hundreds of thousands and displacing millions.

In a symbolic rejection of decades of authoritarian rule, Syrians across the country toppled statues of the Assad family as Islamist-led rebels seized city after city, culminating in Damascus.

In Hama, the site of a 1982 massacre under Hafez’s rule, rebels celebrated by bringing down a statue of the former dictator. Similar scenes unfolded nationwide, from Aleppo to Daraa and Tartus, where protesters destroyed statues of both Hafez and his sons.

‘The Dictator Has Fallen’: Metsola on al-Assad’s Ousting In Syria

Roberta Metsola took to social media to congratulate the toppling of Syria’s longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad.

‘The Dictator has fallen. It is clear that Bashar al-Assad’s brutal 24 year rule of Syria is over as his regime lies in tatters’, wrote the European Parliament President.

‘This is a critical period for the region and for the millions of Syrians who want a free, stable and secure future. What happens in the next hours and days matters.’

‘It is dialogue, unity, respect for fundamental rights, international law that must characterise the next steps.’

This comes as sources suggest that al-Assad has fled to Moscow, with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov issuing a statement saying that Syria must not be allowed to fall into the hands of a terrorist group.

As other countries called for Assad to be held accountable, Syrians around the country celebrated the regime’s toppling, with statues of the late president’s father Hafez being toppled after five decades of rule.

Netflix’s holiday special A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter has officially dropped on the streaming platform.

Featuring 13 songs, the 50-minute production showcases Grammy-nominated singer and actress Sabrina Carpenter’s talents alongside a roster of surprise guests.

Carpenter reinvents holiday classics with her signature playful style, such as remixing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” into “It’s the Most Nonsense Time of the Year,” while also performing original songs like the comedic “What Do I Get My Brother-in-Law?”

Guest stars include country legend Shania Twain, who joins Carpenter for a rendition of “Santa Baby,” and South African artist Tyla, who teams up for Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas.”

Inspired by Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet tour and her iconic “Nonsense Outros,” the special also includes clever holiday sketches, like a twist on A Christmas Carol.
