Wildlife Rescue Team Malta Finds Small Bomb In Għajn Tuffieħa
Local

During a routine turtle nesting patrol at Għajn Tuffieħa (Riviera), volunteers from Wildlife Rescue Team Malta made an alarming discovery, a small unexploded petard washed ashore.

While patrolling beaches for signs of nesting turtles, the team also works to remove potential hazards such as rubbish, sandcastles, and deep holes that pose dangers to both marine life and humans.

Although petards are relatively harmless when wet, once they begin to dry, they become highly unstable and can detonate with minimal disturbance.

Volunteers emphasised the danger such objects pose, especially to children who might unknowingly handle them. Thankfully, the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) responded quickly, safely deactivating the petard and removing it from the site for proper disposal.

The Wildlife Rescue Team thanked both the AFM and their dedicated volunteers for remaining vigilant. Their work not only protects endangered turtle nests but also ensures public safety during beach patrols.

This conservation initiative is carried out by Nature Trust – FEE Malta, supported by the ERA – Environment & Resources Authority, Lottoland Malta, Melita, and MIEMA. Injured wildlife is cared for at the Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park and Wildlife Rehab Centre.
