Marine biologist Alan Deidun has highlighted one of the Mediterranean’s best camouflaged fish the wide eyed flounder (Bothus podas), known in Maltese as Barbun għajnejh imbeżgħda.

“The sea has many chameleons,” he wrote, “and the wide-eyed flounder is one of them!”

The species, which can blend almost invisibly into sandy seabeds, was recently observed at Ramla l-Ħamra in Gozo.
