Why Malta Has So Many Churches – And Which Village Has the Most

Why Malta Has So Many Churches – And Which Village Has the Most.
If you’ve ever been to Malta, you’ve probably noticed something interesting. No matter where you go, there always seems to be a church nearby. In fact, there are over 360 churches in Malta and Gozo combined. That’s almost one for every day of the year!
So why does this tiny island have so many? Well, Malta is a very religious country, and most people there are Roman Catholic. Over the centuries, different towns and villages built their own churches to worship in and to honour their favourite saints.
Churches were also seen as a sign of pride. The bigger and more beautiful the church, the prouder the village. So towns tried to outdo each other with fancy domes, bells and statues.
Now for the big question: which village has the most churches? That honour goes to Naxxar, which has over 20 churches and chapels! That’s a lot for one place, especially when you remember how small Malta is.
Even though Malta is full of sunshine and beaches, many visitors are amazed by how many stunning churches are dotted across the islands. From giant cathedrals to tiny chapels on cliffs, they are everywhere.
Fun Fact: The Rotunda of Mosta has one of the biggest domes in the world. It even survived a bomb in World War II that didn’t explode. Now that’s what you call a miracle!
So next time someone asks you what Malta has a lot of, you can say churches – and you’ll be absolutely right.
