Which Maltese Town Has the Weirdest Nickname? We Ranked Them!
Local

Malta is full of towns with names like Żebbuġ, Qormi and Żejtun. But did you know most of them have nicknames that locals have used for years? Some are funny, some are odd and some are just plain weird. We looked at the strangest ones and ranked them from “huh?” to “what on Earth?”

1. Qormi – Ħobż u L-Forni (Bread and Ovens)

Qormi is famous for bread, and its nickname proves it. You can still smell fresh bread when you walk through town.

2. Żabbar – Tal-Makki (The Maize People)

Long ago, people from Żabbar were known for eating lots of maize. Sounds corny, right?

3. Għaxaq – Tal-Baqra (The Cow People)

This one’s a mystery. Some say it comes from a statue of a cow, others say it’s because of old farm traditions.

4. Mosta – Tal-Pastizzi (Pastizzi People)

Even though you can get pastizzi everywhere, Mosta’s nickname says they love them the most. Fair enough!

5. Żejtun – Żejtun Ħelu (Sweet Żejtun)

Locals say it’s because the people are sweet. Aww. Or maybe it is the figs and fruits they grow there.

6. Bormla – Tal-Ħaruf (The Lamb People)

A strange one. Some say it goes back to Easter traditions involving lamb.

7. Siġġiewi – It-Tnabar (The Drums)

Known for loud festa celebrations and big drums. If you love noise, this is your place!

8. Floriana – Taċ-Ċawl (Soup People)

Yes, really. Apparently, they loved chickpea soup. That’s one way to be remembered.

So there you have it. Malta’s towns are not just old – they’re full of flavour and funny nicknames. How many have you heard before?
