What you need to know before Depp-Heard verdict is issued
May 31 2022 Share

Here is everything you need to know about the Johnny Depp – Amber Heard trial ahead of the verdict.

  • Six weeks on, and the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial is almost over.
  • Depp launched a $50 million defamation suit against Heard after she wrote a 2018 editorial in the Washington Post she wrote about her experiencing domestic assault.
  • In suing for defamation, Depp said in 2019 that he ‘spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath’.
  • Depp’s lawyers went on to deny Heard’s claims of abuse, accusing her of creating “an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity” and “advance her career.”
  • Depp claims that the op-ed ended his acting career, with Heard countersuing Depp for $100 million.
  • The seven person jury is deciding Depp and Heard’s suits simultaneously.
  • The verdict is expected as early as Tuesday, with millions following along.
  • The couple first met on the set of the shared 2011 film ‘The Rum Diary’. Depp was in a long-term relationship with French musician and actress Vanessa Paradis whilst Heard dated photographer Tasya van Ree.
  • The couple married in 2015 after secretly dating, but ended it just 15 months later. Heard cited irreconcilable differences in a petition for divorce, and even filed a temporary restraining order against her spouse amid allegations of domestic violence.

Stay tuned for more information as the story progresses…

From colleagues to UOM classmates: PN MPs wish students luck for exams

From colleagues to UOM classmates: PN MPs wish students luck for exams

Taking to social media, newly elect Nationalist Party MP Rebekah Cilia shared an image of herself with other PN MP Eve Borg Bonello, both of whom are studying at the University of Malta.

Cilia revealed how the two have just finished their first exam and subsequently made their way back to the Maltese Parliament for yesterday’s sitting.

The two wished all students currently undergoing their examination period the best of luck. ‘As a student, I understand that the exam period is difficult for both students and those around them.’

‘I hope that everything goes well and everyone gets the results they are aiming for.’ Cilia first graduated from the University of Sheffield with a 1st class degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Going on to read for a masters in Biomedical Engineering at the prestigious University of Oxford, Cilia was awarded the Medtronic Scholarship for demonstrating exceptional talent and promise in the field of biomedical engineering.

She then went on to read for a postgraduate diploma in Building Services Engineering in Malta, and even pursued a Diploma in Journalism due to her interest in politics. Currently reading for a Bachelor of Laws degree at the UOM, she is a student alongside the youngest MP in Maltese history Eve Borg Bonello for the same degree.

Moschino 2022 collection includes a hamburger skirt and a hot dog outfit

Moschino 2022 collection includes a hamburger skirt and a hot dog outfit
May 31 2022 Share

From cat walk to (hot) dog walk real quick – Moschino designer Jeremy Scott has once again given us something to talk about with his latest collection.

Scott’s latest Resort range is complete with a hot-dog costume, burger dress, and hamburger themed co-ord. And is that a take-out bag styled handbag?

Scott has clearly taken some inspiration from his own previous designs – which include dressing up Katy Perry in full hamburger costume for Met Gala 2019 and a 2014 McDonald’s collection.

It would be interesting to consider who would go for such a style. Given Malta’s top ranking for obesity in the EU, would such costumes reflect our, somewhat understandably problematic, passion for food?

And the prices? The Women’s Sequin Hamburger Mini Skirt costs a whopping €4,364 (reduced from €6,713 that is) on Lyst. The same skirt on Moschino’s website racks up to $9,660.00.

Summing up the collection, designer Jeremy Scott told Vogue: “It’s enthusiastic, it’s genuine, it’s pure. It’s maybe a little bit naïve.” There’s burger earrings and take away cup bags for sale, but all of them sell for quite the amount…

22 bodies retrieved from Himalayas plane crash site after disappearance

22 bodies retrieved from Himalayas plane crash site after disappearance
May 31 2022 Share

Nepali rescuers have successfully retrieved all 22 bodies of the people from a plane which crashed in the Himalayas.

The news was confirmed on Tuesday by the local authorities. Air traffic had lost contact with the Twin Otter plane shortly after it took off from Western Nepal on Sunday and headed to popular trekking destination Jomsom.

After disappearing, the wreckage was found a day later crashed on a mountainside at around 4,420 meters. Ten bodies were brought by helicopter to capital Kathmandu on Monday.

The remaining 12 remained at the crash-site as poor weather restricted access and meddled with the operation. Around 60 people were involved in the search and rescue, with some camping at the site.

Cause of the crash has yet to be confirmed, with the plane having carried Nepalis, Germans and Indians on the plane with many of them on holiday. Nepal’s air industry has historically been critiqued, and suffered from, poor safety.

The EU in fact banned all Nepali airlines from its airspace over safety concerns. A history of plane crashes forms part of the airline’s record, with casualties and injuries made in the process.
