Water Services Fix Damaged Air Pipe At North Sewage Plant

On Sunday afternoon, an operational disturbance occurred due to a damaged air pipe at the North Sewage Treatment Plant (NSTP).

This fault was identified and repaired by early Tuesday morning, the Water Services Corporation (WSC) told Malta Daily.

The incident saw sewage seeping into the sea at Mellieħa taċ-Ċumnija, with a video of this shared to social media by MEP Peter Agius.

‘The WSC confirms that the temporary incident affecting the clarifiers and thickener system at the NSTP has been fully resolved, and the plant is now operating at full treatment capacity’, WSC told Malta Daily.

‘All incoming sewage is being fully treated at NSTP, and no untreated sewage is being released.’

WSC highlighted the long-term commitment to enhancing wastewater infrastructure, which includes substantial investment announced earlier this year for the extension and upgrade of the Ċumnija sewage treatment plant.
