Wales beat Ukraine to qualify for World Cup

Jun 5 2022 Share

Wales have beaten Ukraine in a close game to qualify for their first World Cup since the 1958 edition. The game was very close between the two teams with Ukraine coming close to scoring multiple times.

Most of the neutrals were siding with the Ukraine team due to their current sufferings in the hands of the Russian invasion. Many football personnel such as former Liverpool player Graeme Souness, have argued that FIFA should still send the war torn nation to the prestigious tournament as a sign of solidarity.

The game was very close between the two teams but it was Gareth Bales perfectly placed free kick that separated the nations. The goal didn’t actually come down as Gareth Bale’s but rather as an own goal by Andriy Yarmalenko because of a big deflection by the Ukrainian winger. Wales defender Ben Davies and keeper Wayne Hennessy played insanely well, defending their country’s goal and keeping a clean sheet to send Wales to the World Cup.

The Welsh team will now look forward to a group consisting of USA, Iran and historic rivals England. They will fancy their chances of having a historic run in Qatar.

The first half was not the best start for the Maltese team. They did not seem focused making multiple mistakes in possession which led to coach Devis Mangia on the touchline telling his players to calm down and play. Even though they had a slow start, the Maltese players had better chances than the quite defensive San Marino team.

The second half saw the introduction of Jan Busuttil and Juan Corbalan to the game. The two players changed the game on its head with Busuttil scoring a great individual goal in the 59th minute to give Malta the much needed goal. Corbalan managed to contribute in the 75th minute finding Matthew Guillaumier who managed to head in the ball to double Malta’s lead.

The win sent the Maltese team to the top of the Group D2 alongside Estonia with three points. The Maltese team will now have their eyes on next Thursday’s crucial match against Estonia to carve out a lead at the top of the group D2.
