Visit By The Irish Ambassador To The Maltese Police Cavalry Unit

Her Excellency Caroline Whelan, the Irish Ambassador to Malta, recently visited the Maltese Police Cavalry Unit based in Marsa. Where only a few months prior, the unit had acquired two new horses imported from Limerick, Ireland.

During her visit, Ambassador Whelan, accompanied by Police Commissioner Mr Angelo Gafà, met the two new horses named Karistu and Ġanni.

Commissioner Gafà explained that significant investment is being made in the Cavalry Unit, which is led by officers with a deep passion not only for their policing duties but also for their love of horses. He noted that the presence of the cavalry in locations such as Paceville at weekends is an excellent way for the police to engage more closely with the public, particularly young people.

The Cavalry Unit was established in 1859 and currently has 13 horses, 90% of which are Irish. In fact, nine of the horses are from Ireland, while the remaining four are French. Each horse holds the rank of Inspector.

In recent months, the Police Corps has made strong investments in the unit, not only purchasing two new horses but also acquiring two vehicles to help the Cavalry extend its presence across towns and villages far beyond its headquarters in Marsa. This allows the horses to be transported in greater comfort. Additionally, new equipment has been purchased for the comfort of both officers and horses, along with renovations to the stables and paddock.
