‘Vandalism’ on Marsa statue was actually religious man who went in for a hug

'Vandalism' on Marsa statue was actually religious man who went in for a hug

After multiple reports of an alleged act of vandalism on the statues Our Lady of Lourdes and a praying Santa Bernardina in Marsa, the town’s mayor Josef Azzopardi has revealed that it was actually a worshipper who went for an embrace.

“I have just been contacted by Police Superintendent Sandro Camilleri who told me that, after reviewing CCTV footage, district & community police came to the conclusion that it was a devotee who was praying in front of the statue and went in to hug Santa Bernardina when her head dropped.”

Azzopardi revealed that the statue was previously fixed, which may be the reason why it was weak to begin with. The mayor went on to thank Gużi Vella and his family for taking care of the statues and those who try their hardest to take care of the statue, along with the police.

Gżira progress in Conference League as Floriana bow out in narrow defeat

Jul 15 2022 Share

Gżira United has managed to progress into the next round of the UEFA Conference League after beating Andorran side Atletic Escaldes with a late extra-time goal.

Unfortunately the same can’t be said for Floriana as they were knocked out of the competition by Moldavan team FC Petrocub Hîncești after a narrow 1-0 aggregate loss.

The Maroons managed to beat their opponents on an aggregate score of 2-1  after only getting a 1-1 draw in Malta and narrowly winning 1-0 in Andorra. This win however was won in dramatic fashion with the winning goal scored by Jefferson de Assis, coming midway through extra time. To make things even better for Gżira fans the goal was assisted by debutant and young gem Brooklyn Borg who is still only 18-years old. The game was pretty even between the teams, with very few scoring opportunities for both.

Unlike the other Maltese teams Floriana did not manage to beat their opponents and progress to the next round of the Conference League. They suffered a narrow 1-0 loss in Moldova against opponents FC Petrocub Hîncești. The goal was scored  in the 26th minute when Floriana keeper Kitanov saved a Sandu effort and Moldavan midfielder Iaser Turcan managed to find the net from the rebound.

Gżira United will now face Serbian side FK Radnicki Nis in the second round of the competition. They will not be the only Maltese teams as Ħamrun Spartans have also qualified for this round and will play Bosnian team FK Velez whilst champions Hibernians will also feature in this competition after losing out to Shamrock Rovers in the Champions League. The Paolites will face Estonian club Levadia Tallinn.
