University Of Malta Confirms Validity Of Roberta Metsola’s LL.D Degree

Apr 12 2025 Share

In a meeting held on 11th April 2025, the University of Malta Senate confirmed that the LL.D degree awarded to Roberta Metsola in 2003 remains valid. The Senate addressed allegations made by Stefan Weber, who had claimed that Metsola had plagiarised her dissertation.

The Senate clarified that Metsola, then known as Roberta Tedesco Triccas, had pursued a law degree, not a Ph.D., and was awarded the professional title of Doctor of Laws (LL.D). The university further stated that the dissertation contained no significant issues, aside from some minor citation errors, which were deemed unintentional.

Metsola, now President of the European Parliament, expressed relief that the University had upheld her degree and reiterated that there had been no misuse of the title “Doctor.” She acknowledged that, with 22 years of experience, she would have approached her dissertation differently, particularly in terms of referencing and citation methods. However, she defended the integrity of her work and rejected the allegations as politically motivated attacks on her reputation.
