Five years after the inception of the Valletta Cultural Agency, Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government Owen Bonnici praised the agency’s contributions to Valletta’s cultural legacy, fostered under the auspices of the Valletta 2018 Foundation.
He underscored ongoing cultural, social, and economic revitalization efforts in Valletta spurred by cultural investments.
During this time, the Valletta Cultural Agency has garnered prestigious accolades for its programs, including the Valletta Design Cluster located within the historic Fortifications Interpretation Centre, which received the Malta Architecture and Spatial Planning Awards and the City Brand and Tourism Landscape Award from Paysage Topscape, among other honors.
The agency’s diverse calendar of activities includes the Valletta Green Festival, Pageant of the Seas, Opera in the Capital, Valletta Local Food Festival, Christmas in the Capital program, and the National New Year’s Eve Event. Chairman Jason Micallef emphasized the agency’s pivotal role in Valletta’s regeneration through vibrant events that bring life to our country’s capital.
Executive Director Catherine Tabone highlighted the agency’s varied cultural program featuring visual art exhibitions, major concerts, family-friendly events, and workshops tailored for different audiences, built upon years of international and local cultural collaborations.
In conjunction with the maltabiennale.art 2024 event, the agency will pay tribute to Ray Mahoney, a luminary in Maltese music and poetry, through a concert on April 28th. Additionally, the 10th edition of the Valletta Green Festival will transform St. George’s Square into a lush garden from May 3rd to 12th. On June 22nd, the Pageant of the Seas returns for the fifth time, showcasing maritime activities at the Grand Harbour biennially. Thousands are expected to attend this free event featuring sea-based activities and high-level fire shows.
Lastly, on August 30th in St. George’s Square, Opera in the Capital will return featuring renowned Maltese tenors and international singers.
From October 17th to 19th, the Valletta Local Food Festival will celebrate Maltese culinary delights with local chefs and artisans offering tastings and insights into renowned dishes such as ‘kwareżimal’, ‘il-Vallettani’, ‘Biskuttini tar-Raħal’, hearty soups, and other dishes made with fresh local ingredients.
