Unlucky streak continues for Maltese teams in Europe

Aug 13 2021 Share

Yesterday night, Maltese team Hibernians were only 1 minute away from a historic result that would have seen them qualify to the playoff round of the UEFA Conference League. Irish referee Rob Hennessy however was met with a lot of criticism for most of his decisions with many fans asking if the referee had an agenda against the Paolites.

Not every game starts off with a penalty in the 45th second of the game, but the referee still pointed to the spot, despite the foul being very soft. It was pointed out how in some games it wouldn’t even be considered a penalty but the referee had a different opinion. The penalty was for nothing though as Hibernians keeper Ibrahim Kone saved it. The first half was filled with yellow cards to Hibernians players albeit most were quite controversial.

The second half didn’t start well for Hibernians either, as a mistake from captain Andre Agius led to Riga’s first goal. Attacker Jurgen Degabriele then levelled up the game, with a nice low curling shot. Later on in the game, Jurgen Degabriele scored what seemed a perfect goal, but was somehow was deemed an offside by the Irish team of referees. A red card for attacking midfielder Jake Grech and 7 minutes of extra added time were the following controversial referee decisions. Riga then broke Hibs’ hearths when they scored in the 96th minute.

Immediately after the goal, a Riga player went to provoke the  Hibernians staff which led to fights and ultimately a red card for Hibs’ manager Stefano Sanderra and one of the players on the bench. The goal forced extra time, and in extra time the Latvian champions scored 2 goals to secure the tie.

What should have been a historic night for Maltese football ended in chaos. The Hibernians players and staff should be proud of their achievements, knowing they were 1 minute from creating history.

Despite having plans to marry in 2022, Gozitan soldier Geordie Muscat’s sudden passing shocked the island  and broke the hearts of his family, friends and soon-to-be wife Jessica Rae. In remembrance of the caring and determined 27-year-old soldier, Rae posted a heart-breaking post, detailing how many plans they had in store and how she will always remember him no matter what.

She opened her tribute by stating how she truly believes that our loved ones remain alive within us all as long as we reminisce about the beautiful memories with them. This is how she seeks to keep Geordie alive as he has been the source of her joy so many times in her life.

She opened up how many nights they spent together, looking longingly into each other’s eyes and repeating each other’s names; ‘Jessica Rae’ and Geordie Qaxxuri.’ She revealed that the thing she misses most are the little acts of love and kindness that Geordie did, such as waking her up in the morning through song or calling her before heading off to work. Despite being an unexpected romance, Jessica grew to love him and what he loved as she was inspired by his determination for his passions.

Despite their plans to marry were set for 2022, Rae revealed how she had already married him in her heart. Her wish was for him to see her in her white wedding dress. She also stated how she still found a loving family through Geordie’s own relatives, parents and siblings. She stated that the grief gradually passes, but the love she had for him will remain eternal.

Mae concluded her solemn tribute by calling for people to remember his joy, his pranks, photos of them with Geordie and all other possible recollections they have of him in order to keep him alive.

Rest in Peace Geordie Muscat.

As Hibernians FC supporters yelled angrily at referee officials during a game against Riga FC, Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi was recorded name dropping Yorgen Fenech as he joined in on the fan’s raging. The footage was shared by Lovin Malta after being uploaded on Simon Mercieca’s blog. Hibs lost 4-1 in a home match against Riga FC in a heated game as the foreign team scored in the last few seconds of injury time.

Following Irish referee Rob Hennessy’s controversial pitch decisions, fans directed a whole host of verbal abuse at the referee, using many obscene Maltese offences. Azzopardi was clearly heard yelling ‘You messed it up, linesman’ and then; ‘Ja kiesah, jisfida n-nies… Yorgen Fenech gej jisfida ghal glied.’ The MP joined the barrage of insults directed at Hennessy as things escalated on the pitch itself, requiring police to intervene a possible altercation.
