Two Earthquakes Recorded Near Malta in Central Mediterranean

Two earthquakes were recorded near Malta earlier today, with the first occurring at 9:50am and registering a magnitude of 4.2, followed shortly by a stronger tremor of 4.9. Both events were confirmed by seismic monitoring apps and expert websites.

Earlier reports noted a magnitude 5 earthquake in the Central Mediterranean, south of the Ionian Sea, around the same time.

Scientists say these tremors highlight that this part of the Mediterranean remains seismically active, despite being one of the least studied zones due to its distance from land-based monitoring stations.

So far, no damage has been reported, and it’s unlikely the quakes were widely felt.
