Today, an unusual and distressing rescue unfolded when a turtle was discovered entangled in fishing line that had also wrapped itself around a plastic chair.

While out kayaking with clients, Kayak Gozo spotted the turtle, later named Tarvo, struggling in the water with fishing line coming from its mouth.

Acting quickly, the team at Wildlife Rescue Team Malta freed the animal from the chair and brought both to shore.

From Hondoq ir-Rummien, volunteers began a relay to ensure the turtle’s safe transfer.

Thanks to the cooperation of Gozo Channel Operations Limited, Tarvo was transported to Cirkewwa, where another volunteer continued the journey to our rehabilitation centre.

A veterinary team will soon assess the turtle, with x-rays planned to check for any ingested hooks before deciding on treatment.

All turtles rescued by Wildlife Rescue Team Malta are protected species, and it is illegal in Malta to keep them as pets.

Their trained volunteers hold permits and are equipped to handle such delicate situations.
