Turtle Dies After Rescue Near St Paul’s Islands

The Wild life Rescue team Malta received a distress call from boaters reporting an injured turtle near St Paul’s Islands. The team immediately alerted the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA), who then coordinated with Civil Protection Malta to recover the animal and bring it ashore.
Upon inspection, it became clear the turtle had suffered a serious head injury, likely caused by a boat strike. Despite receiving urgent veterinary attention, it was confirmed that the impact had severely damaged the turtle’s brain.
Sadly, the turtle passed away shortly afterwards.
In their announcement, the Wildlife Rescue Team said, “We are in the midst of peak season, and many people are enjoying time on the water but please remember that the sea remains home to vulnerable marine life. With the nesting season upon us, turtles are likely to be closer to shore.”
The organisation reminded the public that their trained volunteers are fully licensed and equipped to handle wildlife emergencies. If anyone encounters an injured animal at sea, they are urged to call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 9999 9505 immediately.
The team also extended thanks to the vigilant boaters who made the call, their dedicated vets, and their committed rescue and rehabilitation volunteers.
