Italy’s Own Goal See Spain In EURO 2024 Last 16

Italy's Own Goal See Spain In EURO 2024 Last 16
Jun 21 2024 Share

Spain secured a place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a 1-0 victory over Italy, courtesy of a Riccardo Calafiori own goal. The match, held in Gelsenkirchen, saw Spain dominate from start to finish, ensuring their top spot in Group B.

Despite the narrow scoreline, Spain’s performance was commanding, similar to their opening thrashing of Croatia.

Nico Williams was instrumental, tormenting Italy’s right-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo throughout the match.

It was Williams’ cross that led to Calafiori’s unfortunate deflection into his own net nine minutes after halftime. Spain, with six points, now face Albania with the comfort of already advancing to the knockout stages.

Italy, on the other hand, experienced a humbling defeat. Gianluigi Donnarumma’s brilliance in goal was the only reason the scoreline remained respectable. Spain peppered Italy’s goal with numerous shots while Italy failed to register a single attempt on target.

Spain’s early opportunities included Pedri’s header and Williams’ miss from close range. Donnarumma made crucial saves to deny Morata and Fabian Ruiz.

After the break, Pedri missed another golden chance before Calafiori’s own goal sealed Italy’s fate.

Despite late efforts, including fine saves by Donnarumma to stop Ayoze Perez, Italy couldn’t find an equalizer. With Spain cruising to victory, Italy must now secure at least a draw against Croatia to ensure their progression in the tournament.
