Misraħ il-Karmelitani in Żurrieq is set to be transformed from a tarmac road into a vibrant green open space under Project Green.

During a recent visit to the site, Minister Miriam Dalli explained how the area will be converted into a public space for everyone to enjoy.

“With this investment, we are giving the residents of Żurrieq another open space where they can meet and socialise. Through this project, 2,200 residents will now have a space to come together as a community,” said Minister Dalli.

The project will include the creation of a reservoir to collect rainwater from the road, which will then be used to water indigenous trees and shrubs. A new lighting system will be installed, incorporating solar-powered lights, along with benches to create a welcoming recreational area. A dedicated zone will also be provided for yoga and wellness activities.

The visit was also attended by the Project Green team and Żurrieq Mayor Rita Grima.

Project Green’s Project Manager, Joseph Borda, highlighted the agency’s commitment to ensuring that residents have access to open spaces within a 10-minute walk from their homes or workplaces. “As with all our projects, we are integrating sustainable elements. This open space will feature playground equipment for young children made from recyclable materials, as well as pathways constructed from mulch, an organic material that enriches the soil,” Borda said.

The Misraħ il-Karmelitani initiative is one of 16 projects announced by Project Green under the Community Greening Grant scheme.
