Traditional Lampuki Season Launched In Marsaxlokk With Blessing Of Fishing Boats

Last evening in Marsaxlokk, the traditional blessing of fishing boats marked the start of the lampuki season, with a Mass and ceremony led by Canon George Spiteri, Parish Administrator of Marsaxlokk.
This longstanding tradition is a vital part of the local fishing community, symbolising the official beginning of a key period for the industry and invoking blessings for safety and abundant catches.
The event was attended by Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo, alongside fishermen, community members, families, and fishing-related organisations.
In preparation for the season, fishermen spent weeks readying their traditional lampuki poles using palm leaves, a technique developed by Maltese and Gozitan fishers that attracts lampuki by providing shade near deep waters.
This year, the Government distributed around 6,600 palm leaves to support the activity.
The season sees 77 full-time and part-time fishermen registered to fish using this traditional method. The lampuki season begins on 15 August under European fishing regulations based on GFCM recommendations and continues until the end of the year.
Minister Refalo emphasised the cultural and economic importance of the lampuki season, highlighting the dedication of local fishers and the Government’s commitment to supporting a sustainable, resilient sector.
Lampuki remain a culinary and cultural staple, eagerly awaited by families and restaurants across Malta and Gozo.
