Man Arrested Over Saturday Gozo Channel Bomb Threat

Man Arrested Over Saturday Gozo Channel Bomb Threat
Oct 28 2024 Share

A 43-year-old man from Mqabba was arrested following a bomb threat targeting the Gozo ferry, prompting police to question him on charges of spreading false information.

He allegedly made a call to Gozo Channel on Saturday, warning of a possible bomb on the ferries or in the terminals, forcing the company to suspend operations that evening.

According to Times of Malta, this incident followed an unrelated bomb scare on Friday, which also halted ferry services and left passengers stranded.

In Friday’s case, two passengers reported overhearing foreign men discussing bombs, prompting immediate precautions, though no actual threat materialised.

The Saturday threat, however, came from an anonymous call, later traced by police. Authorities do not believe the incidents are linked, though they suspect the second perpetrator may have been inspired by the impact of the first scare.

Both cases led the Armed Forces of Malta to inspect all ferries and terminals, including underwater checks, causing significant disruptions in Gozo and delaying a popular opera at Astra Theatre. The suspect, if convicted, faces substantial fines for the false bomb threat.
