Malta is set to formally recognise the State of Palestine, becoming one of the first European countries to take this significant diplomatic step amid the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works, Omar Farrugia, delivered a poignant message highlighting the devastating impact of the conflict on children. Drawing a powerful comparison between Maltese schoolchildren and the tens of thousands of children who have lost their lives in Gaza over the past two years, Farrugia emphasised the grim reality faced by those living through the conflict.

“While classrooms in Malta are filled with children dreaming of becoming doctors, ballerinas, or veterinarians, in Gaza, the equivalent of an entire classroom of 30 children has been lost every single day for the last two years, They could have been Maltese; they could have been our children. If this is not genocide, then what is it?”, Farrugia said.

Parliamentary Secretary stressed that although Malta alone cannot end this tragedy, the country will take a principled stand by officially recognising Palestine as a sovereign state. Farrugia also called on the European Union to move beyond empty words and uphold its own values by recognising these atrocities as genocide.

“This dark chapter in human history must be named for what it truly is,” he added. “These children are no less than ours.”
