The Number Of New Dwellings Approved In Malta Increased By 51.0 Per Cent

Malta is witnessing a surge in residential construction, with the number of new dwellings approved during the second quarter of 2025 climbing dramatically. According to the National Statistics Office (NSO), a total of 3,027 new dwellings were granted approval in Q2, marking a 42.9 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

The increase is particularly pronounced on the main island, where approvals jumped by a staggering 51.0 per cent. In contrast, Gozo and Comino saw a more modest rise of 7.0 per cent, highlighting a stark difference in construction activity between the islands.

The locality with the highest number of approvals was San Pawl Il-Baħar, with 321 dwellings authorised. Other areas seeing significant activity included:L-Imsida – 183 dwellings, Il-Fgura – 164 dwellings, Rabat, Gozo – 141 dwellings, Ħaż-Żebbuġ – 137 dwellings.

The Northern Harbour district led with 751 new dwellings approved, while the Southern Harbour district recorded the lowest with 401 approvals.

Furthermore, Apartments dominate the approvals, accounting for 70.6 per cent of new dwellings (2,138 units). Penthouses followed with 453 units, maisonettes with 296, terraced houses with 91, and other types such as bungalows, farmhouses, and villas making up 49 units.
