Fruit Flies Are Causing Big Problems In Malta

Fruit Flies Are Causing Big Problems In Malta

The Exterminator stated on Facebook that Malta is facing growing issues from fruit flies, which are becoming a serious nuisance in homes and a major threat to agriculture.

In households, vinegar flies ‘Drosophila melanogaster’ are commonly seen around ripe fruit, organic waste and drains, especially during summer. Their fast breeding makes them hard to control.

More concerning is the Mediterranean fruit fly ‘Ceratitis capitata’, a major pest in Malta’s orchards. It attacks fruits like citrus, peaches and figs by laying eggs inside. The larvae damage the fruit from within, making it unfit for sale and impacting both local markets and exports.

Control methods include traps, baiting and sterile insect techniques in agricultural areas. The Exterminator urges residents to maintain good hygiene and store fruit properly to prevent infestations.
