The Meaning and Origin of the Surname Farrugia

The Meaning and Origin of the Surname Farrugia

The surname Farrugia, one of the most recognisable and widespread names in Malta, has deep roots dating back to at least the 15th century.

There are two main theories regarding its origin. One theory suggests that Farrugia derives from the Arabic word al-farrûdj, meaning “one who keeps chickens.” In a symbolic sense, the word farrûdj or “hen” can also represent family care, nurturing, and protection.

This interpretation reflects a broader cultural appreciation for the familial and supportive roles often linked with surnames.

Alternatively, and more widely accepted by linguists and historians, the surname is believed to originate from the Latin word ferrarius, meaning blacksmith. This occupational name, through Sicilian influence, evolved into Farrugia, referring to skilled workers who crafted tools, weapons, and horseshoes from iron. Many surnames in Malta share similar occupational roots due to centuries of migration from Sicily and southern Italy.

Farrugia is not the only Maltese surname tied to a trade, and like many others, its family coat of arms is a canting shield a visual pun or emblem that reflects the meaning or sound of the surname.

A personalised version of the Farrugia coat of arms can be seen in the Chapel of Santa Marija in Ħal Balzan.

Nearby, the locality of Ħal Farruġ is thought to mean “Farruġ’s farmstead”, further reinforcing the surname’s strong connection to Maltese heritage, both linguistically and geographically.
