The Legend of the Blue Lady: Malta’s Most Famous Ghost Story

Verdala Palace, nestled in the tranquil Buskett Gardens near Siġġiewi, stands as a testament to Malta’s rich history.
Built in 1586 during the reign of Grand Master Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle, the palace has served various purposes over the centuries, including as a hunting lodge and a summer residence for the President of Malta.
Among the tales that surround this historic site is the legend of the Blue Lady, one of Malta’s most enduring ghost stories. According to tradition, the Blue Lady was a young woman of noble descent, often described as the niece of Grand Master de Rohan. She was promised to a suitor she did not love. When she refused the arrangement, her uncle, enraged by her defiance, locked her in a room at Verdala Palace. In a desperate bid for freedom, she attempted to escape through a window but tragically fell to her death while wearing her blue dress.
Since that fateful day, numerous individuals have claimed to encounter her ghostly apparition. Witnesses have reported seeing her in mirrors, on balconies, and even during the annual August Moon Ball held at the palace.
One of the most notable accounts dates back to 1917, when a guest at Verdala Palace reported seeing her reflection in a mirror, despite no one being physically present.
