Sliema’s local council has unanimously agreed to rename a street in honor of the late Robert Arrigo, former Deputy Leader of the Nationalist Party (PN) and the inaugural mayor of the locality.

The decision pays tribute to Arrigo’s significant contributions as the first Mayor of Sliema and acknowledges his deep connection to the area. Authentic Has Been Chosen As The Word Of 2023

Authentic Has Been Chosen As The Word Of 2023
Nov 29 2023 Share

Merriam-Webster, America’s oldest dictionary, has designated “authentic” as the word of the year for 2023, reflecting a substantial surge in online searches driven by discussions on artificial intelligence, celebrity culture, identity, and social media.

The word’s popularity stems from its multifaceted meanings, encompassing both “not false or imitation” and “true to one’s own personality, spirit, or character.” Despite its desirability, the dictionary publisher acknowledges the inherent difficulty in precisely defining and debating the concept of authenticity.

The increasing ambiguity between the “real” and the “fake,” amplified by the AI boom influencing text, images, and videos, further fuelled interest in the term. “Deepfake,” denoting digitally altered videos and photos through AI, emerged as a runner-up for the top word, reflecting the evolving landscape of technology.

Additionally, influential figures like Elon Musk advocated for authenticity on social media, contributing to the word’s prominence.

Other notable words from 2023 include “rizz,” an internet slang abbreviation for charisma or romantic appeal, and “indict,” gaining traction following former President Donald Trump’s indictment in four legal cases.

The impact of British influence is evident, with “coronation” surging in searches after the crowning of Charles III as the new king in May. In 2022, the word of the year was “gaslighting,” describing manipulative behaviour causing individuals to question their realities.
