Traffic congestion at Malta International Airport has once again come under fire, with two major transport associations warning of serious health and safety risks due to what they describe as a continued lack of planning and inaction.

In a joint statement, the Malta Taxi Licensed Association and the Light Passenger Operators Association expressed frustration over “decisions that have yet to be taken” despite ongoing discussions with authorities and other stakeholders.

They claimed that efforts to propose viable solutions have led to “nothing concrete,” while vehicle congestion at the terminal continues to worsen.

“This is a serious situation that affects not only planning failures, but also poses major health and safety risks,” the associations warned.

As the summer season begins, they noted, the issue has become even more urgent, impacting both passenger flow and traffic operations around the airport.

The associations criticised what they view as long-standing inaction and called on the relevant authorities to take “the necessary steps as quickly as possible” to restore order and improve traffic management.

With airport activity set to rise in the coming months, the associations stressed that urgent intervention is needed to avoid further disruption and to safeguard both workers and travellers using the airport facilities.
