National Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan 2030 Unveiled

The National Biodiversity and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2030 has been released, outlining a comprehensive approach to address biodiversity challenges and protect the environment.

Building on the success of the 2012-2020 plan, which surpassed its targets by 11%, it showcases progress in areas such as public awareness, land and marine conservation, policy-making, and the use of EU funds for major environmental initiatives.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli emphasised, “This plan represents our commitment to preserving Malta’s natural heritage for future generations.

Together, we can ensure a sustainable and biodiverse nation,” stressing the importance of collaboration across government and society to meet these ambitious objectives.

The NBSAP 2030 sets 22 targets and 79 actions, in line with global and EU biodiversity goals, addressing areas like ecosystem restoration, genetic diversity, climate change, and sustainable agriculture.

Kevin Mercieca, CEO of the Environment and Resources Authority, added, “This strategy reflects extensive effort and builds on the success of its predecessor. The focus now shifts to working with other entities to ensure the achievement of positive outcomes.”

Cloudy & Rainy Weekend Ahead

According to weather forecasts, this weekend is set to bring cloudy weather over the Maltese islands, with relatively warm temperatures at 27 degrees Celsius.

Friday 20th is expected to bring in rain showers, with the remainder of the weekend retaining a cloudy atmosphere pushing into next week.

Yesterday too saw some localities experiencing flooding, with various pages on social media showcasing the impact in various parts of Malta.

Earth To Have A Second Mini Moon This Autumn

This autumn, Earth will briefly have a second “mini moon.” An asteroid, roughly the size of a city bus, will be temporarily captured by Earth’s gravity from 29 September to 25 November.

This asteroid, originating from the Arjuna asteroid belt, follows an orbit similar to Earth’s. Some of these asteroids can come relatively close to Earth, around 2.8 million miles away, and if moving slowly enough, can be temporarily caught by Earth’s gravity.

The asteroid, traveling at about 2,200 mph, will not complete a full orbit but will stay near Earth for two months before returning to its orbit around the sun.

Discovered on 7 August by NASA’s Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), it measures around 10 meters long, much smaller than Earth’s permanent moon.

Although it will be too small and dim for amateur telescopes, professional astronomers will be able to observe it. Researchers also expect this mini moon to return in 2055, noting that Earth has had similar mini moons in 1981 and 2022.
