16 Year Old Nina Briffa To Run For Local Council Elections

16 Year Old Nina Briffa To Run For Local Council Elections
Mar 2 2024 Share

A 16-year-old girl, Nina Briffa, has received approval from the Nationalist Party to stand as a candidate for the local council in Qrendi, making her the youngest candidate endorsed by the PN to date.

Briffa currently holds the position of president in the PN youth wing Teamstart, a role she was elected to in May, having previously served as the organization’s public relations officer.

However, Briffa is not the youngest candidate nationwide; Izak Catania De Giovanni, who turns 16 soon, is set to run as a Labour candidate for Fgura’s local council. Catania De Giovanni, the son of Labour MP Katya De Giovanni, also aims to make history as one of the youngest councillors ever elected.

This distinction is currently held by Carlos Zarb, who was 17 when elected to the St Paul’s Bay council in 2019.

Briffa shared her gratitude for the opportunity to run for public office on Facebook, acknowledging Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech and the party’s executive for their support.

Additionally, Briffa was recently elected to the student council of De La Salle sixth form, where she is a student.

Malta made headlines in December as the first EU country to permit 16 and 17-year-olds to become mayors and deputy mayors following unanimous parliamentary approval of new legislation. Under this law, councillors under 18 who secure the most votes from the majority party can assume the roles of mayor or deputy mayor.

FKNK President Calls For Meat Lover Respect From Vegan Community

FKNK President Calls For Meat Lover Respect From Vegan Community
Mar 2 2024 Share

Taking to social media, FKNK president Lucas Micallef called for a more tolerant and respectful approach towards meat lovers by the local vegan community.

This follows a post on social media by Animal Liberation Malta and other activists which highlighted the use of 12 de-skinned lifeless rabbits as part of a cooking challenge.

‘Some of the contestants were shocked by looking at the de-skinned rabbits, especially at their heads, and straight into their eyes. Why were they shocked so much’, Animal Liberation had asked.

‘It is absurd to take the life away from an animal just to ‘do a challenge’. And also absurd to care for and love one (domestic animals), but not others which to many are considered ‘food’.’

However, the FKNK president addressed the issue, saying that it is unacceptable that certain activists try to ‘impose their extremist beliefs on others, particularly when it comes to diet.’

‘Whilst I respect one’s decision to follow a vegan lifestyle, I believe entirely in the liberty of choice when it comes to food consumption.’

He expressed admiration for a chef’s ability to work with any form of food stuff and the professionalism in the kitchen, irrespective of what ingredients are used.

‘Let’s promote understanding, tolerance and respect for all individual choices.’

The dog knows exactly where his puppucino comes from in Valletta and refuses to budge until his owner gives in and buys him his favourite drink.

But how could you say no to those puppy dog eyes? The video ends with the retriever waiting in line and then happily smiling alongside his Starbucks cup.
