Super Mario Bros becomes the biggest video game adaptation ever

The Super Mario Bros. Movie just became the biggest video game adaptation of all time, earning a whopping $508.7 million in a single week.

The family film is estimated to have made a whopping $368 million in just the opening weekend, beating previous video game adaptations by a landslide.

The previous record holders were Warcraft, which made $439.4 million in its first week, and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, which earned $449.8 million in the same time span.

The movie also managed to snatch away the title of biggest worldwide opening for an animated film from Disney’s Frozen 2, which debuted with $358 million.

But that’s not all in terms of records as it managed to beat Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania with the biggest opening of 2023.

The movie is now one of just 12 films from Illumination/Universal since 2019 to cross the $500 million mark. This came despite the movie facing some pre-release skepticism and critique, especially following the voice actor announcement revealing Chris Pratt to be voicing the titular character of Mario.

‘Animals in Malta have to suffer due to ineffective administration’

'Animals in Malta have to suffer due to ineffective administration'

Animal activists issued a joint statement stating that, due to a lack of effective administration, animals across Malta are having to suffer.

‘We are saddened by the news that another person has been injured by dogs’ the activists said. ‘Dogs kept and bred by this individual have already been in the media yet under the current legislation he is allowed to keep animals in his care.’

They lamented how there is no doubt that once the dogs have been caught, ‘they will probably be put to sleep and will have to pay with their life for the improper upbringing they have had.’

‘This is because yet again the authorities have failed to protect them and other animals with effective legislation.’

‘Animal Activists and NGOs have been asking for legislation to control breeding and a temporary ban on the breeding of stronger breeds for years. Had the Minister enacted the legislation when the first case was reported in the media, yesterday’s incident would not have happened.’

The statement urged the government, and more specifically Animal Rights Minister Anton Refalo, to take action about the situation, pointing to Commissioner for Animal Welfare Alison Bezzzzina’s recommendation of regulating breeding in 2021, amongst other measures.

This comes after Andre Galea, a breeder, was attacked by his own dogs in Msida, leading him to seek shelter on a car roof after sustaining injuries. Galea’s dogs had mauled his own grandmother to death back in 2020.

The exact coordinates of where the accident occurred were not shared, despite the area being recognised as Youpe Amadi, Sengal.

This is also not the first time a Street View car has been involved directly in a crash. A Google Street View vehicle was reportedly part of a three car pile in Indonesia in 2013 and, in 2019, another such vehicle was caught having crashed into a signpost after veering off the road.

It is also unsure what the situation of the drivers is as not much direct information about the crash is currently available.
