Students Attend The Return Of Rescued Turtle Arielle At Gnejna Bay

A group of students from St. Ignatius College and Handaq Middle School took part in the release of Arielle, a rescued loggerhead turtle, back into the sea at Gnejna Bay today.
Arielle, estimated to be 12–13 years old, was rescued on 29 May 2024 after swallowing a fishing line. Under the care of Nature Trust, she made a full recovery and was ready to return to her natural habitat.
The outing provided students with an invaluable educational experience, allowing them to witness first-hand the challenges faced by marine wildlife. While at the beach, pupils learned about the dangers of microplastics and the risks these pose to marine animals. They also actively took part in collecting microplastics from the sand, gaining direct insight into the environmental impact of pollution.
Students were further informed about local research efforts, particularly the ANDROMEDA project by the Oceanography Malta Research Group at the University of Malta, highlighting ongoing scientific work in marine conservation.
