Ħamrun’s statue of St Cajetan has officially returned to its home locality in Malta after having been transported to Rome for the 500th anniversary of the Theatine Order founding.
Upon its return, the statue was rushed up the stairs of the Ħamrun church as is custom during the village feast.
During its stay in Rome, Pope Francis visited the statue and prayed in front of it.
The statue was placed in the Basilica of Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome and later on the iconic St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
Earlier this month, the life-size statue was taken to Rome, accompanied by nearly 1,000 locals. This marked the first time the papier-mâché statue had left the parish since its completion by sculptor Carlo Darmanin in 1885.
