Despite being the series on its way to become Netflix’s biggest show ever, Korean drama Squid Game was rejected by local studios for over 10 years. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed to Wall Street Journal that he came up with the concept over a decade ago, despite at the time having to sell his laptop for money and halting script-writing due to financial problems. Film studios continuously rejected his pitches for the now famous series, saying it was too implausible and grotesque,
Netflix allegedly picked up the show because they thought it depicted class struggles and thus spoke to reality. Hwang even pointed to the effects of COVID-19 as having increased the disparity between the rich and poor. IGN reviewed the series and gave it a 9 out of 10, being also the first Korean series to land a number one position on Netflix. It’s all anyone is talking about, with TikTok flooded with people games featured in the series and even the player jumpsuits hitting number one on Amazon purchase lists.
