Ultra-endurance runner Zach Vella yesterday completed the toughest day yet of his six-day, 360-kilometre running challenge around Malta, pushing through injury to reach the final stage of the effort in aid of YMCA Malta.

Day 5 saw Vella take on one of the most demanding routes of the challenge, starting at sunrise and heading towards Golden Bay before tackling a long and punishing uphill stretch towards Baħrija. With cumulative fatigue from consecutive days of running, the day required more frequent stops and proved to be the most physically taxing so far.

Vella is also managing a tendon injury in his left ankle, which worsened during the run and resulted in significant swelling by day’s end. His physiotherapy team from Stride Physiotherapy have been providing daily on-site and clinic-based treatment, alongside recovery work, route planning support and footwear advice to help manage the strain.

Despite the challenges, Vella remained upbeat, supported by fellow runners, crew, friends and family. Several runners joined him throughout the day, including participants from Scotland and the Netherlands.

With 300 kilometres completed, Vella today enters the final 60 kilometres, running loops around the Church of Mgarr, his hometown, to complete the challenge.

All funds raised are going towards YMCA Malta’s work with people experiencing homelessness. Donations can be made at
