Selmun Sports Club has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Zaar to revive Mellieħa Basketball and return the locality to national league competition for the first time in more than two decades.

The club is aiming to raise €7,500 by 8 October, with funds going towards coaching, new kits and training shirts, court rental, photography and videography, and marketing for the upcoming season.

Mellieħa Basketball was an important part of the community during its heyday in the early 2000s, bringing together players, families and volunteers. Selmun Sports Club now hopes to rebuild that legacy through youth teams at U8, U12, U16 and U19 levels, alongside a senior men’s team competing in the Malta Basketball Association’s Division 2.

The campaign has already received a boost with training secured at the Ta’ Qali Basketball Pavilion and Fabrizio Mariani, regarded as one of Malta’s most decorated basketball players, appointed as head coach.

If the €7,500 target is exceeded, additional funds will support youth uniforms, equipment, coaching and indoor training facilities, with the long-term ambition of returning Mellieħa to Division 1.

Campaign leader Neil Muscat said the club is “run by volunteers” and will be “rebuilt by its people”, urging former players, families and supporters to help bring Mellieħa’s colours back to the national court.

Contributors donating €10 or more will also receive rewards, including a keychain, supporter T-shirt and an invitation to the season launch.
