Valletta FC have issued a strong reaction following the decision to hand new signing Diogo Tavares a six-match suspension.

The ban was confirmed on Tuesday after the Malta Football Association’s Disciplinary Commissioner announced sanctions stemming from Valletta’s recent match against Floriana FC, in which Tavares was sent off early in the encounter.

In an official club statement, Valletta described the punishment as “baffling”, “very concerning” and “outrightly ridiculous”, stressing that while the club respects football’s rules and institutions, such respect must be mutual.

The club emphasised that fairness, context and objectivity are essential values within the game, stating that these principles were not upheld in the decision handed down. Valletta confirmed that they will be appealing the suspension without hesitation.

Valletta added that they will stand firmly behind Tavares, defend his character, and seek what they believe to be the only acceptable outcome — a fair and objective review of the facts surrounding the incident.

The club also stated that it will not be making any further comments on the matter until the appeal process has concluded.
