Valletta FC Disappointed as Appeals Board Upholds Six-Match Ban on Diogo Tavares

Valletta FC have expressed strong disappointment after the Malta Football Association (MFA) Appeals Board upheld the original six-match suspension imposed on Portuguese forward Diogo Tavares, following the club’s appeal.

The ban relates to Tavares’ dismissal during the 0-0 draw against Floriana FC on 10 January 2026, where the striker was shown a straight red card by referee Ishmael Barbara for elbowing Floriana midfielder Zach Scerri.

In a statement, Valletta FC said the decision was disproportionate and failed to reflect the context and circumstances of the incident.

“Valletta FC is very disappointed with this decision and firmly believes the suspension is not only disproportionate but does not reflect the mechanics and circumstances of the player’s actions,” the club said.

Despite the ruling, Valletta reaffirmed its full support for Tavares, pledging to stand by him during his suspension and assist his return to competitive action.

“Faced with this unjust treatment, in this difficult moment, the club stands with Diogo and will support him over the next weeks in his return to play.”

The club also confirmed that its focus has now shifted fully to its key fixture against Hamrun Spartans FC, urging supporters to turn out in large numbers.

“All the squad, technical staff and club management are now focused on today’s key fixture against Hamrun Spartans FC, and we urge our supporters to be our twelfth man for these crucial 90 minutes.”
