Ultra Malta Trail Debuts with 349 Runners Conquering Majjistral’s Rugged Terrain

The Ultra Malta Trail made a striking debut on Easter Saturday as 349 runners took on the demanding trails of Majjistral Park in an event that marked Malta’s first-ever ultra-distance race. Participants tackled three distances—6km, 21km and the headline 54km Ultra Trail—under soaring sunshine and dusty conditions that tested even the most seasoned athletes. “It was scenic but brutal,” one runner said after crossing the finish line, capturing the spirit of the day.
Local trail icon Jemima Farley claimed the overall victory in the 54km race, finishing 15 minutes ahead of men’s winner Isaac Attard. The event also produced strong performances across all categories, with competitive fields in both the 21km and 6km races.
Race director Marko Bezzina said the aim was to bring a true ultra-distance challenge to Malta, highlighting the country’s untapped potential for trail running. Around 25% of participants travelled from abroad, drawn by the event’s coastal routes through Mellieħa, Selmun, Mistra and Mizieb.
Powered by Columbia Sportswear and supported by Visit Malta, the Ultra Malta Trail has already set its sights on an expanded second edition, signalling that ultra racing has firmly arrived on the islands.
