TWO NATIONAL RECORDS SHATTERED AT MARSA PRE-SEASON ATHLETICS MEETING

The final pre-season athletics meeting at the Marsa Stadium delivered two new national records and a string of standout performances, as more than 130 athletes fine-tuned preparations ahead of this weekend’s Winter Athletics Championships.

La Salle athlete Matthew Galea Soler stole the spotlight with a national and Under-23 record in the 600m, clocking an impressive 1:17.93 to mark a major milestone in Maltese middle-distance running.

Jordan Pace also entered the record books, setting new senior and Under-23 national records in the 300m hurdles with 39.11, his second record-breaking run of the season.

Sprint events were highly competitive, with Omar El Aida Chaffey winning the men’s 60m in 6.85s, while Alessia Cristina claimed the women’s 60m in 7.94s. Under-16 athlete Leah Frendo impressed by winning the 300m in 42.14s.

In the hammer throw, Sophia Curmi surpassed the 50m mark for the first time, throwing 50.07m.

Meanwhile in Melbourne, Jared Micallef continued his record-breaking form, winning the 1000m at the Box Hill Burn in 2:23.61 to secure another national record.

Maltese athletes also featured at the Balkan Indoor Championships in Belgrade, with Jorrin Busuttil, Claire Azzopardi and Thea Parnis representing the country.
