Team Malta With Standout Tuesday at Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026

Team Malta enjoyed one of its strongest days yet at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with standout performances across weightlifting, gymnastics, athletics, swimming and lawn bowls.
Weightlifting delivered the biggest highlights, as Roberta Tabone recorded Team Malta’s best result of the Games so far with a fifth-place finish and a personal-best total of 204kg, narrowly missing out on a medal. Tenishia Thornton also impressed in the -69kg category, setting a new Maltese national snatch record with 93kg before finishing seventh overall with a total of 207kg. Youngster Rylee Borg continued his promising rise, placing eighth in the -88kg category with a total lift of 295kg.
In artistic gymnastics, Philippa Busuttil made history by becoming the first Maltese gymnast to reach a Commonwealth Games apparatus final. A successful score inquiry lifted her balance beam mark to 12.800, securing sixth place just 0.2 points shy of the podium against a world-class field.
Athlete Jared Micallef booked his place in the men’s 800m semi-finals after clocking 1:46.99 in the heats, while Matthew Galea Soler ran a determined 47.38 in the 400m. Swimmer Sasha Gatt also produced a solid performance, finishing third in her 800m freestyle heat in 8:56.85.
In lawn bowls, Connie Rixon was defeated by the Cook Islands, while Shaun Parnis and Troy Lorimer pushed Malaysia all the way before suffering a heartbreaking tie-break loss.
Team Malta returns to action on Wednesday, with Claire Azzopardi and Graham Pellegrini contesting the 200m heats, while Parnis and Lorimer continue their men’s doubles campaign against Wales.
