Team Malta Officially Welcomed At 20th Mediterranean Games Village

Team Malta has officially arrived at the 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, with the delegation welcomed during a symbolic ceremony at the Athletes’ Village.
Mayor of the Athletes’ Village Alessia Maurelli welcomed the Maltese contingent and presented Chef de Mission Charlene Attard with a commemorative token. The Maltese flag was subsequently raised alongside the national anthem, officially marking Team Malta’s arrival.
The Maltese Olympic Committee is sending 35 athletes across 14 disciplines, including athletics, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, karate, raffa, rowing, sailing, shooting, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.
André Cassar, representing Malta in skeet shooting, and badminton player Francesca Clark will carry the Maltese flag during the opening ceremony at the Iacovone Stadium.
Malta has participated in the Mediterranean Games since the inaugural edition in Alexandria in 1951. From an initial delegation of just three athletes, the country has grown into a regular participant and has won nine medals across seven editions—one gold, four silver and four bronze.
Team Malta’s competition begins on Saturday, 22 August. Sam Cassar and Francesca Clark will compete in the badminton mixed doubles qualifying rounds, while Stefan Farrugia starts his raffa singles campaign. Cyclists Aidan Buttigieg and Andrea Mifsud will contest the individual time trial, while André Cassar and Liam Sciberras begin their skeet shooting qualification.
With a strong and diverse delegation, Team Malta now turns its attention to competition in Taranto.
