Team Malta Continues Strong Showing Across Track And Water

Team Malta was back in action across rowing, sailing and athletics, with athletes delivering determined performances across a busy day of competition.
The day began on the water, where Mark Schembri represented Malta in the Men’s Single Sculls Heat 1. Schembri completed the race in a time of 8:33.29.
In sailing, two further races were completed in each of the ILCA classes. In ILCA 6, Katrina Micallef currently sits in 12th place, while Mia Busuttil is in 16th. In ILCA 7, Matthew Flores occupies 15th position, with Benjamin Vassallo in 17th.
Conditions proved challenging for the sailors, with shifty and unstable winds making racing particularly demanding. The compact and tactical nature of the fleets added to the difficulty, but with three races still remaining, there is plenty of opportunity for the Maltese sailors to climb the standings.
On the athletics track, Matthew Galea Soler competed in Heat 2 of the men’s 400m. He made a quick start over the opening 200 metres before finishing strongly in 47.18 seconds — his second-best time of the season.
Team Malta’s busy schedule continues on Tuesday 1st September, with two more sailing races. Tenishia Thornton will compete in the women’s 69kg weightlifting category, while karateka Thyis Antonelli takes to the mat at 15:21 in the Women’s -61kg Kumite Round of 16 against Tunisia’s Wafa Mahjoub.
In athletics, Claire Azzopardi and Graham Pellegrini will line up in the women’s and men’s 200m heats respectively.
