The Maltese Bowling National team consisting of Nicolai Mallia, Nicholas Muscat, Miguel Xuereb and Matthew Magro, led by National Coach Mark Spiteri, travelled to Munich to take part in the IBF World Cup.

The competition included 47 national teams with close to 200 bowlers from all over the world including professional and semi professional bowlers from top countries such as the USA, Sweden, Malaysia, France, Italy, Germany, Singapore, Australia, China and Finland.

This event was both a singles event with multiple pools of 12 bowlers in each each bowler bowling against another, and then the total points going towards the team seeding for the team rounds.

The Maltese bowlers won 20 out of the 44 direct matches, with Nicolai Mallia grabbing 7 out of his 11 direct encounters and end up just 1 win away from the top 2 places in his group that qualified for the finals of the singles.

Malta ended up a respectable 32nd seed amongst these 47 nations and then went on to bowl the team event, again another 11 direct encounters against 11 teams. This was a bit of a mixed bag of results with Malta finishing with 4 out of 11 wins, and this meant the team didn’t make it to the last 16.

The Final of the men’s teams saw France defeat Australia, to become the new world champions, as the USA and Malaysia earned bronze. The women’s team event was won by Denmark ahead of Singapore, as the USA and Malaysia again ended up in 3rd place.

Jovi Ma from China Hong Kong was the men’s singles gold medal winner, while Manon Clement from France was crowned the women’s champion.
